If you’re feeling overwhelmed by SEO, you’re not alone. It can seem like a confusing beast – but ranking your cleaning business on Google doesn’t have to be complicated.
In today’s newsletter, I break down 3 simple but powerful ways get started and to get some quick wins under your belt.
Watch the video below or read on for the summary.
1. Optimize Your Homepage
Your homepage is the most important page on your website — and you need to make it crystal clear what you do and where you do it.
Quick wins:
Use a strong, keyword-rich headline (H1) like: “House Cleaning Services in Wilmington, NC”
Avoid vague titles like “Top-Rated Cleaners” that don’t mention your location.
Add relevant keywords naturally throughout your homepage content — like “residential cleaning” or “maid service in [City Name]”.
Include optimized images with filenames and alt text like “Wilmington-house-cleaner.jpg” and “Local cleaner working in Wilmington home”.
Check how many words your top competitors have on their homepage. Match or beat that length to stay competitive.
2. Create Local & Service-Specific Landing Pages
To improve your chances of showing up in more searches, build individual pages for:
Each location you serve (including smaller towns/suburbs)
Each service you offer (deep cleans, move-out cleaning, vacation rental cleaning, etc.)
Why this works:
It’s easier to rank for smaller, less competitive areas like Carolina Beach than a large city like Wilmington.
Google loves pages that are hyper-relevant to a user’s search. A page about “Move-In Cleaning in Ogden” will perform better than a generic “Services” page.
3. Fully Optimize Your Google Business Profile
Google Business Profiles are GOLD for local SEO. But most businesses set one up… and hardly touch it again.
Here’s what you need to do:
Get reviews — lots of them.
Follow up with happy clients and ask them to leave a review. Use software like Zenmaid or BookingKoala to automate this process.
Add photos and videos regularly.
Snap pictures of jobs (with client permission), in the locations you want to rank in. Google sees where those photos were taken and rewards you for local relevance.
Complete every section of your profile.
Fill out your description, add services under the “Products” tab, and include relevant keywords (e.g., “move-out cleaning,” “residential cleaner,” etc.).
Let’s recap:
Make your homepage clear and keyword-optimized
Build pages for your specific services and service areas
Actively manage your Google Business Profile
These are all things you can do yourself — no fancy tools or tech skills needed.
