5 Ways To Stand Out In The Cleaning Industry

If you feel like you’re constantly competing on price and struggling to grow your cleaning business, you’re not alone. Most cleaning companies operate on razor-thin margins, barely breaking even – let alone paying themselves well.

But here’s the good news: the companies that do stand out and make strong profits aren’t necessarily bigger or better funded. They’re simply different—and they’ve figured out how to position themselves as unique and premium in a crowded market.

Today I’m breaking down 5 practical ways to differentiate your cleaning business, charge higher prices, and grow more profitably.

1. Specialise (Stop Trying to Be Everything to Everyone)

Take a look at your local competitors. Most offer the same generic mix of domestic and commercial cleaning, with vague promises about “high quality” or “great service.” The problem? When everyone looks the same, customers shop on price—and that’s a race to the bottom.

Specialisation changes the game. You might focus on eco-friendly cleaning with natural products and electric vehicles. Or you might go premium and hire only top-tier cleaners—people who’ve worked in luxury hotels, for example. You could even target a niche like post-construction cleans, medical clinics, or Airbnb turnovers.

When you’re the only company known for that one thing, you become the go-to provider—and that means you can set your prices.

2. Deliver Exceptional Customer Service

Yes, customer service sounds obvious. But have you checked your competitors? Try calling the top 10 cleaning businesses on Google in your area. Chances are, fewer than half will answer the phone.

To stand out, do the basics really well:

Answer every call – or have a professional voicemail and follow up fast.

Respond to emails and quote requests quickly.

Handle complaints proactively. If something was missed, fix it – send a cleaner back, offer a discount, or switch the team.

Responsive service is rare in this industry. When clients feel heard and looked after, they stick around – and refer their friends.

3. Set (and Exceed) Clear Expectations

Want five-star reviews on Google and Facebook? It starts with managing expectations. Many businesses overpromise and underdeliver – especially with demanding clients.

Be clear from day one:

What’s included in the clean

When it will happen

How much it costs

Then focus on beating those expectations. Overdeliver, and you’ll earn loyal fans.

BUT be careful. If you take on a picky client (with an endless checklist), you’ll set yourself up for stress and complaints.

Choose the right clients, set the right expectations, and you’ll get better reviews, fewer issues, and more referrals.

4. Be Consistent

This is a people business – and no two cleaners are exactly alike. But inconsistency is one of the biggest reasons clients leave.

Solve this by using checklists. Every cleaner should know exactly what’s expected in every room, for every client. Share that checklist with the client too, so they’re clear on what will be done.

And when you send a cover cleaner? Make sure your team has access to detailed client notes and expectations. Even the best cleaners can’t hit the mark without the right information.

The best brands in the world (think McDonald’s) succeed not because they’re the best – but because they’re the most consistent. You can achieve that too.

5. Go Above and Beyond (Delight Clients and Staff)

Once you have the basics in place, this is how you really stand out.

For clients:

Drop off a box of chocolates or a small gift for a birthday or special occasion

Send a thank-you note after 6 months of service

Surprise them in ways 99% of cleaning companies never do

For staff:

Run a “Cleaner of the Month” competition

Celebrate birthdays with a coffee or small gift

Show appreciation regularly – and pay at the top of the market

Happy clients and happy cleaners stay longer, refer others, and make your life easier. And word-of-mouth referrals are still the fastest way to grow.

I hope that’s been helpful.
