Remote Cleaning: How To Hire The BEST

If you’ve ever struggled to hire reliable cleaners—especially when running your business remotely—you’re not alone.

Recruitment is hands-down one of the hardest parts of growing a cleaning company. When you’re operating without an office, possibly in a different city, or even a different country, finding and trusting the right people to represent your brand becomes even more challenging.

Today, I break down my proven 4-step hiring process specifically designed for remote cleaning businesses.

Step 1: Build a Pre-Screening Funnel

Don’t waste hours reviewing every application manually.

Instead, use a simple form (we use Google Forms) to filter out unsuitable candidates automatically.

Ask questions like:

  • What days/times are you available?
  • How many months of house cleaning experience do you have?
  • What areas can you work in?

For example, we only move candidates forward if they have at least 6 months of house cleaning experience. This filter alone saves hours of admin every week.

Step 2: Two-Stage Interview Process

This is all about filtering based on attitude, reliability, and communication—not just experience.

Here’s how we do it:

1. Quick phone interview (10–15 mins):

  • Candidates book a slot via Calendly.
  • They call us (not the other way around)—this tests their punctuality.
  • We listen for attitude, fluency in English, and general reliability.

2. Zoom video call:

  • This gives us a chance to see how they present themselves.
  • We look for professionalism, warmth, and whether they’d make a good impression on clients.

Pro tip: Always hire for attitude over experience. I once hired a 5-star hotel supervisor with amazing credentials… but a terrible attitude. Never again. You can train skill, not mindset.

Step 3: Paid Trial Clean

Before assigning regular clients, we always run a paid trial clean.

This is either:

  • A one-off clean in your own property (if you’re local), or
  • A real one-off job for a client (if you’re managing remotely)

We let cleaners know upfront this is a trial. If they show up on time, clean well, and we get positive client feedback—we keep them in rotation and gradually introduce regular jobs.

If it doesn’t go well, no hard feelings. They still get paid, and we move on.

Step 4: Gradually Fill Their Calendars

Once a cleaner has passed a few successful one-off jobs, we start assigning recurring clients. These are the gold in your business, so we don’t take chances.

Over time, you’ll build a team of consistent, professional cleaners you can rely on—even from afar.

Final Thoughts

The key to successful remote recruitment is having a repeatable process that filters out the wrong people before they ever get in front of a client.

Yes, it takes a bit of time to set up—but once it’s in place, it saves you hours each week, improves client satisfaction, and makes growing your business way less stressful.
