What NO ONE Tells You About The Cleaning Industry

Thinking about starting or scaling a cleaning business? You’ve probably seen the hype — claims that you can run a cleaning business remotely, connect cleaners with clients using a bit of tech, and hit seven figures in no time. But here’s the truth: there are three core factors that will make or break your success — and no one really talks about them.

1. It’s Still a People Management Business

Running a cleaning business means managing two key groups: clients and cleaners — and both come with their own challenges.

Client Management:

  • Every client has unique needs and expectations.
  • Issues will happen — it’s how you handle them that sets you apart.
  • Fast and effective customer service is critical. Answer calls and emails promptly, listen to the client’s concerns, and focus on finding a solution.

Example: If a client complains about a missed spot, acknowledge the issue quickly and offer to send the cleaner back or provide a discount. A fast, professional response builds trust and retention.

Cleaner Management:

  • High cleaner turnover is a major problem in this industry.
  • Engage with your cleaners regularly — listen to their feedback, support them, and make them feel valued.
  • Monthly check-ins, incentives like “Cleaner of the Month,” and simple gestures like taking them out for coffee can help build loyalty and improve performance.

Pro Tip: A happy cleaner = better service = happy clients = long-term growth.

2. Quality of Service Matters More Than Anything Else

Marketing, pricing, and even tech can only take you so far — at the end of the day, the quality of your cleaning service drives success.

  • Poor quality service leads to client churn, which makes it harder to grow.
  • Aim for a monthly client churn rate of 5% or lower — if you’re losing more than that, it’s a red flag that service quality needs to improve.
  • If a client cancels due to poor service, track it and address the root cause (e.g., specific cleaners or processes).

Example: If you have 100 recurring clients and five (or less) cancel each month, you’re in a healthy range. If 10–15 are leaving, you’ve got a quality issue that needs fixing ASAP.

3. The Phone Still Closes More Clients Than Online Booking Forms

Despite all the tech available today, this is still an old-school industry — the phone is your most powerful tool for securing clients.

  • People trust phone conversations more than online forms.
  • If a client lead comes in, aim to call them back within minutes — the faster you respond, the higher the chance of closing the deal.
  • Overall a phone call strategy will drive a higher overall conversion rate than using a straight online booking form. E.g. 100 ad clicks might result in 20 leads — you could close 4–5 deals through phone calls versus just 1–2 with an online booking form. That’s a 2–3x higher return!

Key Takeaway:
Running a successful cleaning business isn’t about fancy software or perfect marketing — it’s about managing people, maintaining quality, and using the phone to build trust. Once you get these basics right, you can layer on technology to scale more efficiently. And that’s when you can scale to the moon!

That’s all for today. See you next week.
